4 1/2 Months

This was a big week for Zane!! We had our consultation with Dr T (Teichgraeber) in the Medical Center to discuss Zane's irregular head shape and neck issues. Dr T said he didn't think Zane would need a helmet for his head (much to my relief) but he was concerned about his neck and prescibed physical therapy and at home exercises.

The neck condition is called Torticollis and his head condition is called Positional Plagiocephaly - here are some general definitions I got from the internet.

Congenital muscular torticollis, commonly known as torticollis, causes a newborn's head and neck to tilt to one side. An involuntary one-sided contraction of the neck muscles can occur, resulting in an abnormal positioning of the head and limitation of the neck's range of motion

Plagiocephaly is a condition that causes an infant's head to become misshapen, usually resulting with the flattening of one side of the back of the head, commonly referred to as positional plagiocephaly. (Plagiocephaly is a general term for cranial asymmetry, which basically refers to misshapen heads.)

Basically because of how Zane was engaged in my pelvis prior to delivery, his neck was pulled to one side, his right side, and now when he is relaxed his head leans to the right automatically. We need to strech those muscles out so his head doesn't always go the right. The condition has greatly improved since birth because now he can hold his head up and look both ways easily, but we still need to get some help so he doesn't continue to have issues with his neck as he grows.

We are going to start physical therapy soon and see Dr T in two months for an update.

In happier news, Zane rolled over for the first time on his own on Saturday (3/12)!! He has been close but he figured out how to drop his shoulder and push with his leg to roll from his stomach to his back. And this was not a fluke, he did it over and over this weekend! A big step for our little guy!! I hope to catch it on video this week or maybe next weekend and I will share that.
